Getting Ready for Work

Might your child work and have SSI or SSDI?  Yes!

There are many plans that help working individuals with disabilities
and there are folks out there to help through the 104 Work Incentives Planning
and Assistance (WIPA).

The projects across the U.S. and the U.S. territories work with
SSA beneficiaries with disabilities on job placement, benefits planning, and
career development.

WIPAs are authorized to serve all SSA beneficiaries with
disabilities, including transition-to-work aged youth, providing benefits
planning and assistance services on request and as resources permit.

What if the adult with a disability works?

Maybe not for all of the above but they may still receive SSI if their earnings do not exceed a certain level which often changes annually.  See the information below.

The Working Disabled Program (WDP)

WDP allows certain individuals to become eligible for Medi-Cal by paying no or low monthly premiums based on countable income.

What happens when a parent retires, dies or becomes disabled themselves?

Disabled adults receiving SSI may receive benefits through parental contributions to Social Security, often resulting in a higher income level.

What if I die and there is no family member to take over?

There are organizations that provide services to ensure your loved one receives appropriate support. http://goodshepherdfund.org/

The California Department of Developmental Services (DDS)

DDS is the agency through which the State of California provides services and supports to individuals with developmental disabilities. The regional centers serve as a local resource to help find and access the services and supports available to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. http://www.dds.ca.gov/RC/RCSvs.cfm

The "I Want To Work" workbook is designed to assist people with intellectual disabilities to gather information that they can use to obtain employment.
