Research indicates that parent run organizations (like PHP) providing structured training and follow-up are successful in preparing experienced parents as volunteer mentors (Singer et al, 1999). Following along the training is a key in your success as a support parent.

Remembering that you are providing support to someone that may be new to parenting a child with special needs, focusing on their story is the most important role you will play in the beginning.  Sometimes, we form friendships with those we support early on but this is the time for you to practice listening and reflecting.  The following pages in this online support training will prepare you to be an effective listener and support parent.  We thank you for your interest and the time invested in preparing to be an effective support parent.
